Class Descriptions
Spinning Classes:
Plying for Texture: In this workshop, we will practice making textured yarns by manipulating the way we ply singles together. We will spin snarl yarns, cabled yarns, two kinds of knot yarns, and two kinds of spiral yarns. These are all yarns that can be created with “ordinary” Z-spun singles. Along the way, we will discuss how to create a smooth, balanced two-ply yarn.
Class level: intermediate spinning
Class hours: 3
Material fees for class: $12
Class size limited to 15 students
Participants to bring: spinning wheel in good working order, 2 bobbins partially filled with Z-spun singles (they should be about the same thickness and twist, but of different colors) plus 2 empty bobbins, a lazy kate. Instructor to provide: samples for examination, fibers for spinning, notebook with handouts, sundry supplies.
Spinning Marl Yarns: Marl yarns are often defined as plied yarns in which the plies are different colors .We will cover techniques for making those yarns, as well as making marl yarns in which the plies are from different fiber sources. In the process, we will cover strategies for controlling thickness and twist of singles and for plying to create 2- and 3-ply balanced yarns.
Class level: advanced beginning to intermediate spinning
Class hours: 3
Material fees for class: $12
Class size limited to 15 students
Participants to bring: spinning wheel in good working order, 4 bobbins, lazy kate. Instructor to provide: samples for examination, notebook with handouts, fiber for spinning, sundry supplies.
Combing Wool Class: In this class we will focus on the ergonomics of combing, safety, and how to set up combs in your own creative space. We will be working specifically with Viking combs and mini-combs.
One of the favorite parts of this class for students is the chance to work with a variety of types of wool. Students will be working with soft crimpy wools like Cormo all the way up to long lustrous wools like Coopworth and Leister Longwools to make beautiful combed worsted preparations.
In the afternoon we will be spinning our combed top and learning more about the characteristics of the different types of fiber. Spinning hand combed fiber is a real joy!
Materials fee for class: $15
Class hours: 6
Class size limited to 12 students
Different types of combs, a variety of fibers, and combing oils will be provided. If you own combs, bring them. If you don’t own combs, don’t purchase any before class. The instructor prefers students get to try different combs before they purchase. Bring to class: spinning wheel in good working order (or spindle) and combs if you have them.
Weaving class:
Pickup Techniques on the Rigid Heddle Loom: Rigid Heddle looms are great for pick-up patterns. Using a pick up stick or two greatly increases the possibilities of creating patterns. Students will learn the basics if weaving pick-up, weft and warp floats and creative things to do with them (more if time allows).
Class level: beginning weaving
Class hours: 6
Material fees for class: $5
Class size limited to 12 students
Students will need to bring a loom that is warped and ready to weave at the start of the workshop. Looms need to be warped with 3/2 mercerized (pearl) cotton, 8” wide using 10dpi reed and 3 yards long. Students also need to bring shuttles, scissors, blunt tapestry needle, pickup sticks if you have them, filler yarn for beginning and more of the 3/2 pearl cotton in the same and contrasting colors (small amounts) and any other weaving supplies.
